Mawon Holy Place

  • About Mawon Holy Place

    The holy place for entombing the body of martyr Park Sang-geun and for remembering his friendships with the Father
    The Mawon Holy Place is the village of Catholic members in Chungcheong-do who evaded the 1801 Sinyu Persecution to steal into Mungyeong.
    The holy place features the tomb of Martyr Park Sang-geun Matia (1897~1867), who served Father Calais in charge of ministering to northern Gyeongsang-do during the Byeongin Persecution.
    The martyr's tomb was discovered and relocated to this place in September 1985. His statue unveiling ceremony was held in 1996.
    On August 16, 2014, Park Sang-geun was beatified by Pope Francis on Gwanghwamun Plaza in Seoul.

Jinan-ri Holy Place

  • About Jinan-ri Holy Place

    Where the witness 'Servant of God' Father Choe Yang-eup died
    Jian-ri is located at the fork from which Saejae and Ihwaryeong are divided. Choe Yang-eup (1821~1861) was on the way to Seoul to report his ministry activities, when he suddenly fell ill and died. The holy place is dedicated to the remembrance of the Father.
    The minister died and he was buried here after 12 years of laboriously preaching gospel.
    Father Choe Yang-eup Thomas went to Macao in China where he studied theology, and he became the second priest in Korea to be ordained on April 15, 1849 after Father Kim Dae-geon.
    Afterwards, he travelled 2,000 to 2,700 km on foot or on horseback to minister to fellows and others in nobility villages and poor villages in Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, Chungcheong-do, Gyeongsang-do, and Jeolla-do for 12 years.
    In June 1861, while he was traveling to Seoul to report his ministry activities to Bishop Berneux, he passed away at the age of 40 at Oriti tavern in Jinan-ri, Mungyeong-eup due to food poisoning, overwork, and typhoid complications.

Yeoumok Holy Place

  • About Yeoumok Holy Place

    Fellowship community created by St. Yi Yun-il John and Seo Chi-bo Joseph
    Yeoumok fellowship community was created by St. Yi Yun-il (worldly name, Jeheon, 1823~1867, John) and home of Seo Chi-bo Joseph. In 1866, the police officers of Mungyeong raided this place to arrest some 30 believers, including the then Chairman of the community Yi Yun-il, and took them to the Mungyeong government office. St. Yi Yun-il was executed in Gwandeokjeong, Daegu in 1867. He was 45 years old.
    During the Byeongin Prosecution, the martyred were Seo Chi-bo's sons, namely, Seo In-sun Simon (1808~1868), Seo Ik-sun (?~1868, John), and Seo Tae-sun (?~1868, John or Peter), who had lived here and fled to Sangju, Gyeongsan, etc
