About the Geunam Seowon

  • History

Geunam Seowon (old-day academy) looks simple and clean, boasting of the beautiful wood texture and tranquil features of a traditional Korean house.
The academy was built in 1665 by local Confucians in memory of the scholarships and virtue of Hong Eon-chung and Yi Deok-hyeong, with their mortuary tablets enshrined therein. Afterwards, Kim Hong-min, Hong Yeo-ha, Yi Gu, Yi Man-bu, and Gwon Sang were additionally worshiped. The academy was closed in 1868 at the command of Prince Heungseon Daewongun, but it was restored by the Confucians in September 1982, and still exists today.
The academy is used to offer lectures on humanities and scholar experience programs for students and citizens. The Chulsadongi Scholar Experience Course, which targets elementary and middle school students, offers traditional costume wearing, lifestyle attitude and etiquette of the scholars, and etiquettes for greetings, customary events and teas, folklore games, including pitch-pot, Jegichagi (kicking shuttlecock), and Neolttwigi (two persons jumping on the board on both sides), and learning about Mungyeong Arirang.
