Festival Description

‘Mungyeong Saejae, black birch / We move forward with the Hongdukke bat / Hongdukke bat is lucky / It is manipulated by the hand of the Big Baby / When passing through Mungyeong Saejae / Tears run down the hill.’ For the Mungyeong people, Saejae pass is a parting place, as well as a place for venting accumulated resentment. It is also the Arirang pass for having to say farewell to the lover.
In 1896, the Mungyeong Arirang lyrics was noted in sheet music by missionary Hulbert for the first time to be brought to light. This gave life into the Arirang song whose written records were previously nonexistent.
Several pieces of Arirang lyrics offer the word ‘Mungyeong Saejae’. A typical example is the first verse of ‘Jindo Arirang', which could not accidentally happen.
Arirang has settled in the hearts of the Korean people after they went through painfully difficult times.
As the echo of Arirang spreads nationwide, then from Mungyeong to the world, Mungyeong, which is the hub city of Arirang, aims to popularize Arirang and further pass it on to the coming generations.
