About the Undal Valley
- Undal Valley
An old growth thick virgin forest which covers the sky fully, even in broad daylight, provides the feeling of grandeur yet coziness.
The water that flows through every valley is so cold it feels as though ice blocks are floating in it, and if visitors dip their feet in and feel the breeze from the forest, they will get chilled to the bone. The 300 year old fir tree forest has old dead trees scattered around as if it is a sculpture to provide elegance, and the unknown birds chirp away.
Walk through the thick forest until the Iljumun Gate of Mt. Undalsan Gimryongsa Temple comes into view. If you walk further, an old temple surrounded by thick forests appears to your right side.
Gimryongsa Temple is known as the temple where the great monk Seongcheol preached for the first time after 30 years of training and discipline in Buddhism. The temple was constructed by monk Undal in 588 (10th year of King Jinpyeong of Silla), and it was called Unbongsa Temple. It was renamed during the Joseon period after the 18th century. The temple mountain presents 4 hermitages, as well as a hiking trail for hikers and culture explorers. - Address
