About the Mt. Hwangjangsan

Mt. Hwangjangsan sits at the southeastern end of Wolaksan National Park, featuring the stone markers of Jakseong Fortress and Mt. Bongsan. It attracts many mountain climbers with its valleys and rocky hills surrounded by thick forests. This area with Mt. Daemisan (height of 1,115 m) being the principal mountain was named as Mt. Bongsan in 1680 (sixth year of King Sukjong of Joseon dynasty), so this mountain is also known as Mt. Hwangjangbongsan. Mt. Bongsan means the mountain that the nation directly manages and protects after selecting a suitable region to plant and grow trees for getting wood needed for building palaces, ships, etc. With deep valleys, primitive forests are well preserved, cliffs are outstanding, and in the neighborhood, there is a cluster of climbing mountains, such as Munsubong Peak (1,162 m tall) and Mt. Doraksan. The upper portion of the Geumcheon River, a branch of Naeseongcheon River (a branch of Nakdonggang River), runs around the southern side of the mountain.
